Hmm, I would say I am Bohemian within the bounds of personal responsibility (in other words, only a little). I would never "spend freely and hope gaily" to the point of forcing others to subsidize my hedonism. I do take the world as I find it, but it is also important to me to pay my own way and not expect others to pay for my whims. I think Mr. Burgess is romanticizing this way of life in the extreme, I think I would find such a person irritating and immature. It's only "light and graceful" when you're not the one paying for it! Love the sea glass, by the way, with the copper--a great contrast!
ReplyDeleteIt is definitely a romanticized description of Bohemian. While not promoting it as a lifestyle, I think it is more about going your own way in the world rather than doing only what is expected of you. But artists (Bohemian or not) have faults like anyone else. Like yours Keirsten, mine is a more practical brand of Bohemianism.

ReplyDeleteMaybe a little less recently - managed to hold down my current job for three years (!) without wondering off to travel around Eastern Europe in a campervan or disappearing in North Africa for four months.
I have always paid for it all myself though, I've never ever had to be subsidised by friends, family or the state.
