Asymmetry

I've tried asymmetry after a while using fabulous ceramic shard connectors by Nitta Elomaki.

First pair is only asymmetrical because of the focal ceramic components not being quite the same.  It was the first pair so I could only manage slight asymmetry :D 

I played around a bit more with the second pair, it was hard work but I think I like the end result.  Hope you like them too.

Purple Please

I recently received a lovely, large gift of beady goodness from Monica Pena of Mariposa Originals. Contained within the package were a gorgeous pair of lampwork beads. I was so inspired to use them right away. Just look at all the yummy swirls of color in the glass. Swoon!

I paired them up with my ceramic Ferris Wheel components and it was a match made in heaven! I used some purple and blue metallic hexagon beads in the middle. They flash in the sunlight.

Lastly the earrings have some Bali silver beads and spacers sprinkled throughout. Shout out to Monica for generously sharing her stash with so many others. 💓 The Purple Please earrings are available in my shop now.

Aztecs

Feeling like a complete change from what I've been working on lately - lots of soft blues and greens, pearls, wood, natural colours and seaside designs - I was itching to use some bright colours and geometric shapes.

I came across these lovely hand painted ceramic teardrops with Aztec patterns. The Aztecs were a Mesoamerican culture that flourished in central Mexico from 1300 to 1521. They made use of various designs in their warrior drawings,  paintings and the pictographs that adorned the walls of their temples. But bold and colourful was the name of their game. 

         For my first pair, I went long with bright copper twisted rings and  sunny yellow ceramic beads.

The second, clashing blues, pinks and red! The collars are wood, the beads Czech glass and vintage black ceramics.

Thirdly, moody grey, black and blood red with Czech glass, vintage ceramics and dark silver earwires. 

And lastly, a gorgeous green where the pyramid beads echo the border - those top beads are beautifully faceted vintage onyx. Again, with dark silver earwires. All the heavy duty dark ball end headpins are from Faerystones.

The drops are very versatile, and lend themselves to a variety of designs - you can really have some fun  with these, mixing and matching the block colours and shapes. Clash, contrast, or complement, they are colourful, striking and very cheerful. And boy, do we need cheer at the moment.

Hearts and Musings

With Valentines Day on the horizon, I've been making heart themed ceramic components. Today's earrings are my first completed heart pieces.

I did a lot of thinking, over the winter holidays, about what direction I wanted to go with my ceramics. Last year I focused mainly on selling my ceramic components. It was a more profitable endeavor than selling jewelry, but I missed designing jewelry - my first love. Also, you have to make a lot of jewelry components if that is going to be your main focus. I didn't enjoy the production pressure that caused me. So I've decided that this year I am going to focus on designing finished jewelry, using my own handmade ceramic jewelry components. I will still occasionally sell beads or design jewelry with art beads from other artists, but mostly I want to tie together my ceramics and my love of jewelry design.

These sweet earrings combine my ceramic heart charms, with Swarovski crystals, commercially made ceramic floral bead caps and sterling silver.  They are one of a kind, which makes them a perfect gift for that one of a kind person in your life - mom, sister, friend or yourself! New Directions

While I've made jewelry for most of my adult life, I only began working with clay about 5 years ago. I've been mostly offering my ceramic components for sale to other designers, via FaceBook and my website. But I feel myself moving in a new direction right now. I want to reduce my emphasis on selling my components to other designers and mostly focus on making jewelry using my own ceramic pieces.

I've opened up an additional shop that solely focuses on jewelry featuring my ceramic components, such as these delightfully rustic, sage green flower earrings. I also have some easy going post earrings on offer.

Treasures, Old and New

Recently when I was cleaning in my office, I was putting things back on shelves, taking things off shelves that didn't belong there, and straightening things on the shelves.  At some point, I stopped tidying and started looking through the drawers and boxes of artisan-made ceramic beads I've collected over the years.

There were so many beautiful pieces, from delicate porcelain charms to large carved and vividly colored tribal style beads.  I really did have all the best intentions of finishing up the cleaning I'd started, but I found myself picking up beads I hadn't seen in a while, turning them over in my hands, reacquainting myself with them.

When I got to my stash of beads by Karen Totten (one of my favorite artisans), I saw a pair of beautiful green spiral connector beads I'd had for quite a few years.  I turned them over and looked closely at them and wondered what if I paired them with rustic, whimsical ceramic faces I'd bought from artisan Judie Mountain in Tucson this past winter? 💗 

From that point, it was on.  Once I'd finally determined what all the components were going to be (Karen Totten's green spiral ceramic beads, Judie Mountain's ceramic faces, an oval copper connector, a scalloped ceramic ring also by Karen) all that was left was putting them together.  I really had fun making these rustic and whimsical and asymmetrical pretties.

Thanks so much for reading!  I won't be here for my next scheduled time (October 24) because my husband and I will be in Hawaii to celebrate our son's wedding. 💗 But I'll be back.

Rustic ceramic, African flowers, Leather

Hi, everyone!  💗

Lately I've been experimenting to see what different types of earrings I could make pairing beads I've had on hand with Czech glass, chain, fiber.  I've also been making beaded leather necklaces recently, which got me to thinking, why not use thin leather cord to tie some earrings together?  (Not that this is anything new--in fact, I've made a few earrings knotted together with leather in the past--but somehow this felt different.)

I had the beads I wanted to use:  carved African flower beads and rustic, red-and-black ceramic triangles by Sarah Kandell-Gritzmaker of Slate Studios Supply.  I picked some tiny black lampwork glass rondelles by Beeboo to use as well. 

I kept the design simple, using only the three components.  I fastened the 0.5-mm leather to the charms with lark's head knots, and then fed the two ends of the leather cord through the rondelles (a tight fit) and the flower beads (just right).  At the top of each flower bead I made a loop and tied a small barrel knot in each of the leather pieces, cutting away the extra cord, and adding tiny drops here and there of good ol' GS Hypo cement to make sure the knots stay just where they are! 

And then they were finished.  😊

Glass and ceramic

Hello earring friends,

Nicola Morse had a de-stash a couple of weeks ago and I was able to BIN these amazing lampwork glass beads before anyone else did. They were made by Michelle Johnston, and are in a wonderful purple and fuchsia. 

I paired them with dark gray ceramic drops which were in my recent order of ceramic gorgeousness from Petra Carpreau, some spacer lampwork glass beads from Lonely Beads, Swarovski crystal and handmade earrings from Lucy Haslam.

Summer colour!

So we have had a taste of summer over here in the UK. And it has inspired me to create some earrings with bright summer colours.

My starting point was Petra Carpreau's ceramic sticks. Love the vibrant reds yellows and oranges in these two pairs. They scream hot summer sun. 

In this first pair they are accompanied by some large juicy cherry red agate barrels. Just luscious...

The second pair have some delicious carnelian and pyrite rondelles. Love the sunset colours in these. And of course, both pairs have oxidised brass hoops to frame the ceramic sticks, for that extra bit of drama :-)

All of the semi-precious gems are from Sylvia Stungo's shop -a treasure trove of pretty things. These earrings will be available in my show this week over in Facebook Land -look for The Earrings Show.

Sugar Skulls

Who doesn't like them?! Well I never did, but they've grown on me now. For today's post I used a pair of my painted resin skulls. I kept them simple as there is so much going on already...(the honest truth is I had no idea what to do with these 😅).  Hope you like my matchmaking.

Ferris Wheel Tassels

When you buy faceted gemstone briolettes the strands often come with matching tassels on the ends, which I save. Today's earrings upcycle some tassels from a strand of carnelian briolettes.

I paired the orange tassels with a pair of my ceramic Ferris Wheel components. Between the ceramic connectors and the tassels I have bronzy-orange Czech glass flowers, silver spacers and Swarvoski crystals.  These earrings are really long, but I figured that this way I can give them a "haircut" to any length the purchaser desires. Don't you think these would be fun, swinging from your ears, on a sunny day?

Dreamy ceramics

Hello earring people! I've been having a bit of a break from jewellery of late. I made so many new pieces for a showcase a couple of weeks ago, I was spent! I was happy to take out my tools and look through some recent purchases of components for today's blog.

Now, these ceramics are by Spanish artist Mari Carmen Rodrigez Martinez of Majoyoal. If you haven't seen her work before -go take a look. Her glazes are just beautiful. The pair I made for this blog are a beautiful pale green with lemon tones. 

I added some rustic African brass beads to accentuate the ethnic feel to these, and finished with some brass jump rings and spacers to highlight the pretty details on the ceramic charms. I like using jump rings for decoration, rather than just as a way of connecting things together                              

 Below is a pair I made for my last show with gorgeous pieces also by Mari Carmen -this time with beautiful blues and indigo. I used some aqua recycled glass chunks with these, pretty twisted jump rings and silver leaves.

All that glitters

Hello everyone! My last post of the year, and it's a glittery one :-)

Treated myself to these beautiful components from Petra Carpreau's shop. Firstly, these gorgeous porcelain and ceramic triple star stacks with 3 different glazes. Aren't they fantastic?

I added some brass triangles with some African silver spacers, and Hill Tribe silver beads. Cool party

 earrings, perfect for the festive  season!

Now this next pair are a commission and feature more of Petra's triple glaze stacks, but this time -pretty circles. This time I wrapped some pretty bronze seed beads around the middle section and added some more gorgeous Hill Tribe silver beads

The star earrings are available in my shop And that's it from me for 2018. Just remains for me to wish you a Happy Christmas and a happy, creative 2019

Gorgeous ceramics

Hello! My turn on the blog again. Mojo has been lacking recently -too many things to do, and creative pursuits are always the first things to be shelved. But this morning, I had some time. And the mojo returned! 

Looking in my stash for some inspiration for this blog, I came across some seriously beautiful discs from the magnificent Claire Lockwood of Something to do with your hands. As always, with Claire's work -the colours and glazes on these ceramics are stunning. I worked on these gorgeous deep purple discs first.

I thought Jana Bliznakova's wonderfully tribal stoneware beads added a nice contrast to the glossy purple of  Claire's little concave discs. I added some pretty czech glass teardrops, brass chain and some purple glass spacers. 

For this next pair, Claire's ceramic discs were the starting point again. A gorgeous blue-green glaze on these. 

A dash of czech glass again (this time a little green flower in the centre of the discs) with more chain and a wrapped green czech glass teardrop. I went with some rustic, chunky African recycled glass beads this time.
