We're All Ears :: February Inspiration + Earring Love Fest!

Hello lovelies!

I just want to take a moment and thank you for your support of Earrings Everyday. This month marks the one year anniversary of the We're All Ears challenge. This is something I wanted to do to involve all our lovely readers in each month, also to challenge myself, and I really had no idea of how much you would enjoy it! You get to watch us share our favorite earring designs, but this challenge calls you to be creative. We couldn't be happier that you have continued to share your love of jewelry and creating with us with each monthly challenge. If I have inspired you, I am deeply grateful.

This month with the dead of winter pressing down on me, I needed to find a little color. Just a bit. Okay. A LOT! And I found it in the form of these brilliant watercolor illustrations paired with fresh flowers for swoon-worthy art. I could not decide which one I liked best, so I included a whole garden of the flower girls for your inspiration. See for yourself the soft ethereal wonders...

Malaysian artist and photographer Lim Zhi Wei (a.k.a Limzy) is the creator of these whimsical flower girls. She has a passion for turning every day objects into things of delicate beauty. For 2015, Limzy created a very limited run of a calendar of her Flowergirls. How marvelous would it be to gaze on those dreamy beauties every day of the year! The beauty of this art is that it is ephemeral. It will not last. Yet Limzy has captured the essence of the bloom in such a spectacularly unique way and preserved it in her prints. Feathered Stacks

Several weeks ago I got a message from the lovely Malin de Koning, inviting me, along with several other designers, to make up earrings from a pack that Malin put together and to participate in a blog hop to show off the results. Here's one of the pairs that I made.

They are perhaps my favourites of the eight pairs I made, and I'm very tempted to keep them.  The main black and white barrels are some I got recently from Jon Burgess, a UK bead maker, who works with polymer and opened an Etsy shop towards the end of last year.  I like the assymetry they bring to these earrings.

Storm Clouds

Storm Cloud Earrings

When the clouds begin to build and turn darker and darker gray, many would find their mood turning as gloomy as the sky, but not me. I find the energy of the storm somehow refreshing and stimulating. Furious rain and wind somehow tap into my creative core and ideas begin to swirl about, ripe for elaboration. My gray birds eye rhyolite earrings reflect that frantic force of the swelling storm with their natural edges and soft gray and green markings.

I have a weakness for this stone in its red/brown variation and was pleasantly surprised to find out that it has other color combinations that are equally appetizing. These stones in soft gray and celadon green are luscious mirrored images. Wrapping the stones part way with darkened copper wire, I decided to finish the wrapping with pale green waxed Irish linen cord and complementing seed beads.

Wild Child

These earrings were inspired and created to match a necklace I recently made, using similar components and beads. The inspiration necklace included a beautiful artisan lampwork focal I picked up in a tiny little (The best kind!!) bead shop in AZ last year. Really nice workman ship. I love buying artist's beads. Knowing that I can contribute to someone else's art while feeding my own creative needs is the most rewarding experience for me.






The artisan lampwork bead has shades of black and gray and a bit of a lavender hue as well. 

I played off the colors of the bead by adding in some lavender jasper (from Alexanders Bead Bazaar- Seattle, WA) along with some gray labradorite, white African glass and finally some handcrafted ceramic beads (Cindy's Art & Soul) in shades of gray.

With the earrings I had to get creative since I didn't have the large focal to work with - I chose some small (found) black stones. The stones were hand picked from the beach here in WA - just last week! I drilled them and wrapped them with fine silver wire - adding in the lavender Jasper and handcrafted ceramic beads by Cindy's Art & Soul. The ear wires are hand crafted, sterling silver.

Throwback Thursday - Winged!

Hi all...today's post is an homage to Facebook's Throwback Thursday!  I got a little behind and forgot that I agreed to fill in today, but thought this would be a fun thing to do.

These are earrings I made back in 2011...I had taken an online class with Stephanie Lee who taught me how to cover a copper base with molten solder, then embed brass filigree into it.   This technique really opened up a world of design possibilities to me and I use it a lot in my work today.

These are embellished with pretty faceted peach moonstone briolettes and my hand wrought sterling earwires to complete the airy, fairy look!

Like most of my work, I tend to make things that can be worn with my staple day to day outfit...jeans & boots.  I envision these with a flowy white shirt as well!

Cedar Earrings

Shortly before we left to Mexico, we took our niece and her fiancee to the one of the few temperate rainforest in the US; a day's drive from our house.  While there we saw giant maples and firs draped with veils of moss.

We also saw what is supposedly the world's largest Western Red Cedar.

I was thinking of that humungous cedar when I made these earrings.  

 The brown ceramic hoops by Marsha Neal, represent the reddish-brown wood of the Western Red Cedar.

 The swirling green, muted purple, black and cream of the lampwork by Beads and Botanicals, represents the cedar branches, moss and all the lush forest growth. I topped the earrings by my own handmade ear wires that echo the round shape of the ceramic hoops.

If you ever have an opportunity to visit Washington's rainforests, don't pass it up.  You'll be glad you went!
