Summer Lemonade

Today I want to talk about life handing over some lemons and making lemonade with it...

I loooooooove lemonade, especially when it looks like this:

Summer Lemonade Earrings by Nathalie Lesage

Topaz, Chrome Green Tourmaline, Yellow Aquamarine, Copper Earrings
These earrings are so much fun in person!
The gemstone drops on the chains add fun movements and catch the light so well...
I made these last year, and they are still available on my website... just waiting for the right soul.

If you visit my website and it's not 'up', it's because I'm in the process
of making some changes to my site and adding on other types of products.
So don't mind the web work in progress if things look a bit strange.
It's all very exciting stuff :)
Stay tuned!

Amaya

When I spotted these Bohemian Gypsy Soul art tiles by JLynn Jewels I knew I had to have a pair...problem was...which color combo would I choose, there were so many! After much contemplation, I chose this pair because I pictured combining turquoise (of course!) with these and my new love of orange/yellow paired with turquoise. Very pleased with the way they turned out!

I think they would look great with a white peasant blouse like this one found at the rusty zipper.
These earrings are available HERE on my website.

Thanks for stopping by and have a fabulous weekend!

Amen

Today is a big day here in the UK. Election day. I've been waiting for this day to come round for the last five years, as I hope against hope that the current government will be shown the door. This result (as you may well know!) is far from certain. I can't remember an election that has been so hard to call - or a campaign period that has been more infuriating and dispiriting.  I should probably draw a line under politics now, but there is a point to my opening. I am not a religious person. However:

The charms are some vintage ones I picked up on Etsy. I've added patina and distressed them a bit, then layered them over some slabs of rainbow-coated orange agate. The lampwork beads were made by Maryse at Glass Bead Art.

Bye for now, with fingers crossed, Claire

Beauty in the Eyes

Isn't it the truth? It's old-timey, cliche, and overused, but the saying that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder will always hold water. One of the incredible things about humans beings is that we all have different ideas of what beauty is---what pleases us, makes us smile, stays in our mind long after the initial vision is gone.

No one version of beauty will ever trump. How boring would it be if everyone looked the same, anyways? Diversity: it's necessary on a biological level as well as a "keeping your interest" level.

While I tend to mix media with abandon in my jewelry, I like to think that my pieces still share a common aesthetic thread: primitive organics. My version of beauty pays homage to forms occurring in nature---however abstract, however old, however futuresque. I love to mix sprawling organic forms with manmade art beads or vintage bits from the past.

Today's pair of earrings is no exception. Two segments of copper have been beaten, twisted, and oxidized so that they resemble branches or vines. I strung each hoop with a single vivid otherworldly lampwork glass Basha bead. The dichotomy between the gnarled twisted copper and the striking flash of the beads just makes my neurotransmitters go crazy...in the best way possible.

So if you've been bored with mainstream ideas of beauty and have always wanted to explore different aesthetics, go ahead and take the plunge---you'll be surprised how many people from your tribe are out there.

Happy Wednesday!

¡Feliz Cinco de Mayo!

or Adiós a los Franceses

Mexicans celebrate this day as a victory in battle against French occupation after the Mexican-American war. Americans are more likely thinking of the first great party opportunity of spring? Whatever your reason, it's a day to be festive and colorful and just have a little fun.

I chose bright orange carnelian as a contrast to the verdigris brass shields for my Cinco de Mayo earrings, along with tiny tube beads of green turquoise stone. The wonderful shield components come from Dime Store Emporium on Etsy. They actually come with three holes, but I punched in a couple of extra. Don't do this if you are concerned about the patina remaining totally intact, because it did chip a bit.

My husband and I are aficionados of añejo tequila, aged at least one year in oak barrels. You don't need a lime with this smooth fragrant tequila, but the lime looks great in the photo.

We're All Ears :: May Inspiration

One of the perks of having a daughter in a dance school is the chance to witness to some amazing performances. Last weekend was our own dance recital/spotlight showcase (which is truly the best amateur dance performance in Central Wisconsin), but on Tuesday evening about 25 of us traveled about an hour away to the Appleton Performing Arts Center to view an evening of dance from world renowned troupe Pilobolus.

It was thrilling to watch this troupe of about 8 dancers transform on stage. They did a total of five different dances that ranged from raw and gritty to a celebration of the beauty and power of the human form. There was heaven and hell represented along with a great dose of humor in an illusion of escapes through a collaboration with magicians Penn & Teller.

The most traditional piece that we saw was a tango with six of the dancers set against a backdrop of shifting video of colorful buildings in Los Angeles. The dancers were on stage for a total of about 8 counts and cycled on and off at quite amazing regularity, each time wearing something completely different. And I mean, completely different, right down to the shirts, pants, dresses, and jackets that would match the rainbow colors on the screen.

After doing a little research on this, I came to find out that the live version that we saw was inspired by a music video of the same name for a song called 'Skyscrapers' by the band OK Go (if you haven't seen their video for the song 'I Won't Let You Down' shot completely in one take with hundreds of extras, you really should watch it!).  Trish Sie, the choeographer (who is the sister of the lead singer) and dancer Moti Buchboot are shown in the official video against these ever-changing urban landscapes. This was translated to the sextet of dancers in the Pilobolus troupe with split-second timing - and a staff of three dressers just off stage and behind the screen making sure they don't sashay across the stage half-dressed. Considering that we just came off a weekend of dance and quick changes, this was most fascinating to us.

In the live performance there are six dancers... one 4 1/2 minute song... 32 costume changes... 43 pieces of clothing. It could be a train-wreck but it was completely mesmerizing, ground-breaking and electrifying.

I couldn't find a video of the entire live performance, so I will leave you with the official music video, plus a video that shows just a portion of the live dance that I saw, and the set of still shots you see throughout.

And a snippet of the live performace.....

I am intrigued by the color, the music, the give-and-take of the tango, the fluid movement and intense tension of their bodies. And those quick costume changes.

What inspires you about this dance?
