Cherry Blossoms

Who doesn't love a bit of cherry blossom, eh?

These beautiful enamelled charms are by  French artist Carole Pons of Brume de terre. If you've not checked out her shop yet -do. Such beautiful work. Delicate and vibrant at the same time.

These are her pretty Japanese cherry blossom charms. This pair -a rather striking pillar box red. With little freshwater pearls and oxidised black brass hoops

I bought this turquoise pair a while ago ( I may even have written about them before!). Czech glass and red lampwork spacers accompany them, and the enamels are framed by oxidised black brass hoops. These were a favourite pair, and I was delighted when a lovely friend bought them. They look rather splendid on her

Siren red

Hello Earring Lovers!

I have been making quite a few pairs of earrings for a showcase at the end of this month over in Facebook Land. I particularly enjoyed making this pair.

The starting point was a pair of delicious enamelled 'tinnies' by Kimberly Rogers of Numinosity. I love everything about these! The shape. The colour (that siren red!). The texture. They remind me a little of a Rothko painting -dense colour and lots to see the more you look.

I wanted to accentuate the angle of the charms with some oxidised brass. I like the way they make the tinnies background, rather than foregroud. Some pretty contrasting czech glass and a little oxidised brass hoop to add to the clean lines, and voila!

Utterly Lovely Stuff

A Happy Fall Out

 

 

It's been a busy week so far, invoicing and packing orders after a show over the weekend. Today I'd planned to make  a new pair for the post but sod's law says that the cold that has been brewing as a sore throat since last Friday chose today to make its debut in full technicolour! So with a head full of cotton wool, I offer you this pair that I hadn't had time to photograph for the show. 

 

 

Blood red lampwork criffles from Kimberly Rogers  dancing flirtily above ceramics from one of my all time favourite makers HappyFallout. Sadly, another not making any more.  Great contrast of red and green - picked up in the Czech glass bicones - and an interesting placement of holes!
The beautiful 'tangled' earwires you will recognise as Lucy Haslam's.

                 That's my lot, I'm afraid - hot vimto, ibuprofen and bed is calling me! Keep well.

Wonderfully Weird.

In my beads/gems/findings (et al) storage system I have a drawer labelled 'Odd Stuff'. It's for stuff that just doesn't fit anywhere else.

It's mostly filled with things I have got from our own Kimberley Rogers who obviously shares my love of all things weird, wonderful, edgy or gothic. Wacky headpins that look like larva, guitar picks or something equally weird, tektite chunks, odd shaped rocks etc.

And so to this week's earrings. I just couldn't resist these new headpins of hers - she calls them Combobulations - crusty, pitted, shiny, great shape and colour but look at those evil little tongues of flame poking out from the bottom! Positively devilish.

I was a bit stumped as to what to put with them, so of course they sat on the table for a couple of weeks waiting for inspiration to strike.

 
 





Then  I looked into the 'odd stuff' drawer and there were the perfect chunks of deep blood red agate (looks like glass). Stacked with some new silvery Czech glass rondelles and popped on my favourite dark grungy studs and there you are. 

 

 

 

On Saturday I'm off to Venice for a few days - we are celebrating my sister's birthday in style, staying on the Grand Canal in the kind of faded grandeur only Venice can provide. I'll be reporting back in my next post - hoping to find a good Murano glass bead shop of course!

Lady in red

 I’m not a full time jewelry designer. I wish I was but at this moment it’s not enough to pay the bills. So I need to plan my “play”days. Usually it’s on Sundays. When I’m in the flow, designs seem to happen without any effort. My fingers hardly can keep up with the ideas popping up in my head. On other Sundays my muse decides to take a day off. Creations made on a muse-less day sound like a sweet yet ordinary melody. Nothing wrong with it, but it just doesn’t sing. It’s missing drums, guitars, back vocals.

For my interview with Lucy Haslam of Faerystones beginning of this year I made some give-away earrings for readers to win.

I was only able to make something at the last minute. And just at that moment my muse decided to party somewhere else. Nice. NOT.
I managed to make a couple of earrings. For this pair I used some beautiful porcelain drops from Petra Carpreau of Scorched Earth on Etsy. Normally my go-to beads to coax my muse out of the closet. I combined them with some Greek ceramic as well as brass washers, red lampwork beads from Amy of Lampwork by Amy and handmade ear wires from Lucy. They turned out ok but not amazing or stunning, let alone breathtaking or sensational. Not that I see myself as a designer making breathtaking designs, no, I’m still far away from that stage. Hopefully one day. But you get my drift. It was missing pizzazz. So it sat in my work-in-progress box for some months, waiting to be finished.

A couple of weeks ago I decided to wrap copper wire with some red seed beads in between the dangle and the brass washer. For me that made the difference between an ordinary simple melody and a complete song.

Red Raku Earrings

When I showed these earrings to my friend Rebekah Payne of Tree Wings Studio, her comment about the color palette was, "Bright, clear blue autumn sky... last green of summer... rusty red shades of turning autumn leaves. Yep, works for me!".

The raku fired ceramic drops were made by Diana Ptaszynski of Suburban Girl Studio.  And the hand-dyed and hand-felted Wooly Wire is the creation of Nellie Thomas.

No Tea and Crumpets for Me

Spike Earrings

It is off the beaten path that we find the most interesting people, places and experiences. When we are not concerned with what everyone else is doing or wearing or eating, we are likely to discover something that would otherwise have escaped us. With a long holiday weekend coming up, maybe we should think about where everybody isn't going as our destination?

In these earthy Bohemian earrings, I use Czech glass, brass, copper and gorgeous primitive ceramic components from Petra Carpreau of Scorched Earth on Etsy. I don't know whether Petra likes tea and crumpets; I just love her work.
