Exquisite Ellipse Earrings

These beautiful brass, ellipse shaped earring components were really inspiring to work with. They have such a soft, pretty turquoise patina and a silky smooth to the touch finish.

I used pink Venetian glass cube beads, that are lined with Sterling silver foil, to top off the earrings. Gold spacer beads bring out the gold tone in the brass and turquoise ceramic floral bead caps finish the look.

Textures of porcelain

I have a love of wildlife and quite often I like to use birds in my designs. These two pairs of earrings feature porcelain components by Emma Wilson and both have a bird theme. I just love the detail and texture as well as subtle colours in Emma’s organic designs. Her pieces are small and dainty so I feel require a delicate and sympathetic touch when designing with them.

For this first pair of earrings I have used Emma’s components with a bird design and chose to highlight the pink/red colours with lampwork spacers and headpins by Linsey Peck as well as using a hint of gold with the seed beads and bead caps. The bronze ear wires are by Louise Goodchild.

For the next pair I have used Emma’s fan shaped components that have an Art Deco feel about them and thought that these adorable lampwork birds by Juliette Mullett would fit perfectly. Again, I have matched the pink and blue colours with lampwork spacer beads and some shimmery textured Czech glass daggers that reflect both colours. Then I've finished off with brass/gold colour bead caps. The ear wires are gold filled.

Thrift Store Treasure

On Sunday, I was in a thrift store and saw this pair of earrings on offer for $1.00.  The tarnish on the silver metal told me that it was probably Sterling silver.  The style looks like it was from the transitional period between Art Nouveau and Art Deco. One of my favorite periods of art!  Let me tell you, I grabbed those $1.00 babies so fast it would make your head spin!  I knew I'd found a treasure.

I polished the silver and deconstructed the earrings.  There were a few small nicks in the silver, so I turned the silver pieces over to their best sides.

I added diamond shapes of Peruvian Opal and tiny Thai silver cubes.  I adore how they turned out.

These are keepers.  I don't think they will ever show up in my shop.  I'm wearing them now as I type this and I imagine they will make frequent appearances in my outfits.

I found these fabulous fan-shaped shell beads at a local shop, Powderhorn Trading Company. They are just lovely, like giant pearls. I used my embossed poppy caps on them in sterling silver, with Argentium silver earwires and Indonesian glass beads (from Happy Mango Beads) in a soft turquoise color and matte finish.

I was surprised, when they were finished, what a strong Art Deco vibe they had, which delighted me because I adore Art Deco!! I think it was the repeating fan shapes and angular lines, with both the shell beads and the caps--there are fan shapes, sunbursts, and similar motifs everywhere in Art Deco! And of course an emphasis on angular patterns:
