Turquoise

Hello everyone.

Here we are mid-way through March already -how did that happen? I've been busy making some new pieces for a showcase in April. Since I've been working  with silver, everything takes so much more time. Sometimes it all comes together easily...sometimes, not!

These 2 pairs of earrings behaved themselves  pretty well! The first pair are for my lovely mother-in-law, whose birthday is in a couple of days time. She has several pairs of my earrings in her jewellery box (poor thing!) but this is the first time I've made her some studs. I recently bought some little turquoise cabs, and they are such a lovely colour! I made some little sterling silver bezel cups for them and soldered some posts to the back and voila!

So I thought I'd make some other earrings for my showcase using these cabs. Who doesn't love turquoise, right? This time -I made some teardrops from silver wire, which i textured and set the cabs onto. I thought I'd solder some posts at the top -to give them clean lines and a contemporary feel. These ones are oxidised to bring out the texture.

This second pair will be available over on The Jewellery Show on Facebook in April.

Hope everyone is staying healthy. I'll be back in a couple of weeks

Heart & Soul

I enjoy using symbolism in my work; I love when an idea hits you indirectly.

The eye connectors by Inviciti  were absolutely perfect for this design!  Some say eyes are the gateway to the soul and I think they're right.

To me, the large textured jump rings with the deep grooves symbolize radiance.

I almost lost my mind when I found these rare vintage sacred heart charms on the bottom!  I tried over and over to capture their detail and amazing color but it wasn't easy.

I've never really been into"wordy" type beads per se. However, I do use them as a sort of contradiction.  For example, a "Lucky" word bead might be used with a black cat or something that normally evokes a darker meaning. 🙃

Thank you for checking out my worktable today!  Hope you found a little inspiration! See you next time!

Gradations...

There are times that I've bought beautiful components because I fell in love with them, and sometimes they've sat in a drawer for years.  And there are the "most of the time" purchases, the ones that are transformed into jewelry fairly quickly, though I don't always know immediately how or what to design with them.  And then there are the times when I know exactly what I want to do with something the moment I see it.

Seeing (and buying) these charms by Inviciti was one of those times.

The first thing I wanted to do with these charms was to paint the crescent moons a pearlescent white and then string 15/0 glass seed beads on 2-ply gray Irish waxed linen thread and wrap them around the charms.

My usual modus operandi would be to search through all of the most rich, saturated colors I could get my hands on (because COLOR!), but for the Lady Moon and these lovely dark and rustic charms I wanted to stay with a palette based on moonlight, moonshadow, and the dark of the night sky, so I chose an ombre shading of pearl white, into silver, into dark gray, into black (and back again).

The earrings are lightweight, with backings of fine paper to cover the thread and ensure the strength of the earrings.

Many thanks to you all for reading.  I will be back on the second Thursday in February!  Love you all!  💗

In Praise of Color! 💗

I enjoy designing and making jewelry for a lot of reasons.  I love following the spark of a creative idea and enjoy learning and using techniques that allow me to make new kinds of things.  I enjoy the feel of wire-wrapping and, even more, the back-and-forth rhythm of a knotting project.  I also love scrolling through my favorite haunts on the net for new art beads and components (well, who doesn't?).

But, even though it's sometimes hard to point to exactly what inspires me to design something, it's almost always color or a colorway that grabs me first.  Color is powerful:  It energizes us, soothes us, nourishes the part of our being that knows and responds to beauty.

I've had a wonderful relationship over the years with the talented jewelry artisan Helena Benkoczka of Areto Beads and Jewellery, who makes gorgeous jewelry and components in multiple media.  But I've particularly loved working with her vibrantly colorful polymer clay earring charms, and I thought for today's blog post I'd introduce my newest pair of earrings made with Helena's components as well as share a few of my earlier earrings made with her colorful earring beads.  It's a Feast of Color for the Eyes!

Blue-Sky Days

With components as colorful
as Helena's (including these, left), my urge is to really go with it by using beads (lampwork, glass seed beads, and copper), fiber, and even ear wires that play up the colors, in this case, the orange and teal.

Pink Champagne
These earrings (above) were made with Helena's teardrop components, a shape I grew
to love because they're perfect for adding colored rings and bead dangles
for movement and even more color.  These are some of my favorites. ðŸ’—

Fruit and Vine

These teardrops (left) are such a blast of color, and the earrings were SO much fun to make.  With seed beads on top and dangling from the purple aluminum rings, Czech Saturn beads, and little lampwork glass slices in a grassy green to match the waxed cord, and green niobium ear wires.

Colored Feathers, Colored Stone

This pair (right), more recent, starts with a vibrant pair of Helena's teardrops that have so many colors that I chose just two colors to use in my earrings:  purple and magenta (magenta and purple lampwork beads, purple Czech rondelles, magenta cord, purple rings, and tiny magenta seed beads).

Summertime Mandalas
The vibrant floral earrings above are brand-new--I couldn't resist the lush colors of Helena's gorgeous mandala components!  I hung lots of little beads from sterling silver rings, including pink agate rounds, tiny faceted pacific blue apatite rounds, silver rondelles, faceted dyed purple jade rounds, and turquoise blue magnesite rounds, finishing each beaded dangle with tiny sterling silver drops.  They have a Summer of Love sort of vibe, I think.  ;)

Thanks for reading, everyone!  I'll be back again in a couple of weeks.  💗

Silver In All It's Glory _ Hoops Are For Any Day

I feel like silver doesn't really need any bead or color to be beautiful. It's quite lovely on it's own. And hoops are my personal go-to earring of choice. Different sizes for different occasions work wonderfully.

Going to see Cheap Trick at the Amphitheater? Gimme the big swinging hoops! Going out to dinner with the family? Gimme the medium sized hoops! Going out to the grocery store and just need a little something on the ears? Gimme the tiny hoops. (I can sleep in those too!) Yes, I love hoops any time, any day.

BTW, Cheap Trick is still fabulous in concert!

I've had a HUGE amount of fun and immensely enjoyed this summer working on new jewelry for my shop. My big reveal is today! Finally, breathing easy for a day or two... taking a few days off, then I'll be back to it working on the next update! #ilovemyjob

These are a few of the earrings I am offering in today's shop update:

Raw Silver Post Stud Earrings

Feeling grateful for so many things today. For open windows with a cool breeze. Fresh air coming in. Tea this morning with a good friend. Laughs, smiles. My jewelry bench and tools. Being inspired. And also, for this blog. For all the sharing and inspiration.

Today's offering has been rattling in my head for days. I wanted to do some post dangles with small hoops and raw silver nuggets and this is what I came up with...
These earrings are .999 Fine Silver except for the posts and post nuts which are .925 Sterling Silver.
This set is a nice light weight and I think they'll be great for everyday wear. I am very pleased with how they came out and plan on doing more in this style with gemstone dangles. Stay tuned..

Happy Spring!

Southwestern Bold

These Big Bold Sea Urchin Buttons have been hanging around my studio for some time,
I decided to finally use them myself!

I received these amazing Southwestern Headpins not long ago from Karin Hruza of Beadfairy and I've been dying to use them!

So I decided to go for it and make these long and luscious Southwestern Bold Earrings!

I added Faceted Turquoise beads on top!!

They are 3.25" long, I think possibly the longest I've ever made!

You can find them available for sale

Thank you!

Kristi

Cubist Roses

It's not often that I use clearly identifiable imagery in my jewelry. I usually prefer to leave things more abstract and open to interpretation - makes things more interesting and guarantees that no two people will have the same experience.

However, when I saw these burnt graphic ceramic cubist roses from DonnaPerlinplim, SOMETHING inside me clicked. What IS that that thing? Our muse? Our happy place? The voice that keeps talking and doesn't know when to shut up?

I took the background golds, silvers, and ivories and pulled them out using my beloved stacked bead approach: old neolithic quartz trade beads from Africa, discs of real ostrich shell (I know!), shards of crusty Roman glass, and some grungy wee metal bead caps. I finished things off with some globby soft soldering on the wire wraps to make things interesting.

The end result is cubist modern meets grungy primitive - now that's not something you see everyday!

Happy Wednesday!

Periwinkle Drops

Periwinkle is my new favorite color. I didn't give it much thought until my friends and I discovered an old book that my mom had called, "Color Me Beautiful" by Carole Jackson. Apparently in the late seventies and early eighties women had "Color Me Beautiful" parties where they had their skin, eye and hair coloring analyzed and they would then be a season. Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. I knew my mom was an autumn and I just assumed that I was too. My friend (who happened to be a natural at this after reading this book and finding even more info on it via the internet) told me that I was wrong, that I am a summer. Summer? My least favorite season (I know, oddball here-but I hate the heat)! But after reading up on what colors to wear, jewelry, make up, etc. well...I gave in. She was right. I was doing most everything wrong (of course!)...well, except turquoise I had that on my side. I bought a periwinkle blouse and got so many compliments on it. Who knew? Periwinkle is my color.

If you are curious now as to what season you are, well here's a link to help you get starte
The original book and hey look, it's on Amazon!
