Rock the Weekend

Strange days, aren't they? How to keep sane whilst isolated at home? Do I keep my little business running or not? Without creating, I'd go bonkers. More than that, creating adds a good dollop of mindfulness in a spinning world.
But we are not supposed to visit the Post Office unless essential and our village one has closed, so  a drive to the nearest town is needed.  Anyhow, I had orders to send to the US, so I sorted myself out and finally got to grips with paying on line for my postage, and printing address and customs labels. I shall go back to supporting my local Post Office when we come out the other side.
So on to the earrings. I'd had a marvellous strand of Mexican Sun Agate delivered - each piece a tiny world of colour and texture. At some point I intend to make a necklace with the majority, but in the meantime I couldn't resist picking out the more stunning pieces to make some earrings.

The sun agate lends itself to rustic designs, and goes well with jasper - picture or leopardskin - and rustic, crusty pearls. But you can make a statement pair just with brass wire and beaten brass square studs. Versatility! And as I'm lucky enough not need the additional income from my jewellery (being  a pensioner - doesn't feel too good at present, but there are upsides, trust me!) I'm donating all my profits to our local foodbank for the foreseeable future.

Stay safe everyone, look after yourselves and your families. See you soon.

Pobrecitos

I was chatting with buddy Kim of NuminosityBeads the other day and she called something or someone a "pobrecito". Being from the Midwest, Spanish isn't as prevalent in my lexicon as I'd like it be. Since I'm a word hound and love to pepper my conversations with obscure underused linguistic gems, I immediately googled this funny little term. Turns out a "pobrecito" is more or less a "poor little guy". What a perfect expression!

You stubbed your pinkie toe--it's a pobrecito.

Your basset hound puppy trips over his big floppy ears--he's a pobrecito.

You always got picked last for the kickball team in gym class--you're a pobrecito (or pobrecita).

As I was in the midst of creating a silverworked agate drusy earring series several weeks ago, I found myself cooing over this wee lilac purple pair. So tiny, so easy to overlook, so easy to underappreciate next to their bigger, swankier mates. The earlier conversation with Kim was fresh in my mind, and voila, a star was born.

To create these teeny post earrings I cut, soldered, filed, and sanded sterling silver sheet and bezel wire plus trios of my hand-cast cratered granules. Such a soft spring hue to usher in all the budding flowers, bulbs, and blooming trees. Squeal-worthy little babies.

So now you have a new word for the day--use it with abandon!

Happy Wednesday,

Winter Solstice in the Desert

Joshua Tree National Park, CA
I took a trip to the desert last week which happened to be Winter Solstice and a huge, full moon. I can't even begin the describe how beautiful and perfect it was. Both eye opening and jaw dropping gorgeous.

At a glance the desert appears dry and lifeless but once you soften your view and relax you'll see it's teeming with life and magic.

Just back home yesterday I wanted my next creation to reflect the colors, look and feel of the desert. Prickly plants, enormous rock formations, sandy earth, tall grasses, Joshua trees...
Joshua Tree Park, CA
It's funny because I have always considered myself more of a mountain girl. But I've discovered that I truly love the desert, and I hope I am fortunate enough to go back one day.
Sterling silver earrings feature: disk charms- mill rolled with fabric, Agate stones dangling on ball tipped pins, Handcrafted ceramic beads and green Grossular Garnet gemstones, hand forged ear wires.

may Peace and Love be with you in the new year and always!

Amen

Today is a big day here in the UK. Election day. I've been waiting for this day to come round for the last five years, as I hope against hope that the current government will be shown the door. This result (as you may well know!) is far from certain. I can't remember an election that has been so hard to call - or a campaign period that has been more infuriating and dispiriting.  I should probably draw a line under politics now, but there is a point to my opening. I am not a religious person. However:

The charms are some vintage ones I picked up on Etsy. I've added patina and distressed them a bit, then layered them over some slabs of rainbow-coated orange agate. The lampwork beads were made by Maryse at Glass Bead Art.

Bye for now, with fingers crossed, Claire

Mixed Metal Swirls

Recently I experimented with combining
White Copper and regular Copper Metal Clay and here are the results.
 I love the look!

Some say they look like Petrified Wood or Sliced Agate!

Petrified Wood                                                                             Sliced Agate

I tried using complimenting beads on the wire wrapping
but in the end they looked best wrapped simply with no embellishment.

Whether they resemble anything else or not I think they are very beautiful and interesting. I love how the where the 2 metals alloyed to created a third color where they connected. Exaclyl what I was hoping for.
If you'd like to see how I made them check out my post on Art Jewelry Elements HERE.

Green, hopefully....please?

I have been so inspired by thoughts of Spring this last week!

These "hopeful" green earrings are a combination of some borosilicate glass beads created by a fellow Frederick, MD glass artist, Julie Delaney, and I chose them a while ago for their lovely, muted shades of green...my all-time favorite color!  I created the sterling and faceted green agate components after a wonderful workshop with Richard Salley, where I learned to solder bezel cups and set tiny cabochons.  In my quest for the perfect, Spring-like, green creation, I paired the 2 and came up with these!

We haven't really had a bad winter here in Maryland, but for some reason, I am totally ready for new shoots of green to spring from the ground.  They actually have here and there on warmer days...I know they will die back when the big snow/cold finally hits here, but they are always a hopeful sign!

Daylily shoots from my garden...
