We're All Ears :: December Reveal

If you haven't watched the video inspiration for December, please watch it now.

This video is just mesmerizing to me. I can watch it over and over again. If I worked at this company I would never get anything done!

The kinetic movement is so very intriguing. So that is what I was trying to capture with my earrings. But of course earrings are the perfect kinetic structures with their dangles and moving parts. And the very neutral color palette forced me to think more about the way the pieces interacted and less on the balance of the colors and how they work together.

The first thing that caught my eye in this video are the round wooden balls that are suspended. I remembered that I had this strand of stone beads (no idea what kind) that I picked up at the Bead & Button show someplace. They have the perfect coloration and mottling like the balls in the sculpture. I knew that I wanted to keep it simple and suspend them on some hammered steel paddles. I made the ear wires too, but they are in the wrong gauge wire, too thick for my ears. So I will have to swap them out. But they reminded me of a Galileo's pendulum. Simple and unadorned, the movement is what speaks for them.

Do you recall that point in the video when the balls are suspended in the air and you can spot a labyrinth or a flower shape if you are in the exact right viewing spot? That is what I was trying to achieve with these. I call them "moveĊ" which is Latin for 'I move.' These took a lot of engineering (and a lot of swearing) to get them to hang just right. They look great dangling, but don't drop them! I suspect that these would be the kind of earrings that would be eternally tangled in your jewelry box that you never wear them. But I do like the way they have this suspended look and the motion.

I am a big fan of watching shows where they show you the inner workings of the factory. I love to see how the conveyor belts move and see all the parts work together to get the job done. In the video, I found it just as fascinating to watch the inner workings of the mechanism that moved all the pieces as I did watching those balls morph in mid-air. All those miles of cable, all those little spools and smooth running gears. Fascinating! I tried to recreate that by making an assemblage of cogs and gears. That chain is my absolutely all time favorite. I have been seeking spools of this for years. I find it in little bits at craft stores and I always buy all they have. Wish I could find a larger supply! I love the dark and the light of it. These earrings called 'Working Parts' have a decidedly industrial feel but with an Art Deco flair.

What is it about this video that fascinated you?

  1. Wow, those are some spectacular designs. The simplicity of the first pair is elegant. The intricate assembly of the second pair is fascinating. I'd love to see how they move. And I don't know how you assembled the gears in that last pair, but it's a fabulous look.

  2. I love your moveo earrings. They might be a tad unwearable but they are very unique. The working parts too is a great design from the design methodology point of view as its a more indirect interpretation of the concept

    1. Thanks lovely ladies! I do like the Moveo ones. They look great on and dangle just so, but I dropped them a few times and I could see they would get easily tangled. But I will keep them hanging on my little earring tree and they will be fine! The swearing came in the form of getting that center one right... I made a coil and then looped in on there just so and I don't know if I could recreate that (it was hard enough to do it a second time!) ;-) Off to hop! Enjoy the day! Erin

  4. Love all three pairs, Erin! I think my favorite is Moving Parts. I like how you used that decorivet to link your gear elements and the chain fringe is so fun! Thanks for picking such a fun inspiration... it was so nice to just get to play with something like that.

  6. I don't know which pair I like the best! The designs are all wonderful. They all capture the spirit of the inspiration piece. I love the colors in the chain of the last pair. Where on earth do you find that chain!

  9. All 3 pairs are great. I'm especially drawn to the last pair though. The gears combination is great and I agree with you about the chain. It is a great colour, and the shape of the indivual links is perfect.

  11. Erin, these earrings are strokes of sheer genius. Cogs and gears. Why didn't I think of that? I have a million of those in my stash. I love how the first pair mimics perfectly the art piece and the simple design keeps the focus on the beautiful bead. The second pair are so cool! Perfect proportion on the dangles. (I can understand how swearing ensued with those. Good grief!) In the third pair, how are the gears and cogs attached to each other? I couldn't tell. I don't have a favorite; I love them all. As always, your lovely jewelry is highlighted by your beautifully composed photos. You are so very talented!

    1. The secret.... is that little black ring... That is from Vintaj and it is called a deco-rivet. There are two prongs on the back, and I just placed them and secured all with the prongs. They aren't going anyplace. And I love Rings and Things for chain, but alas they do not carry this one. I have found it by the foot at Beadolique, but I want full spools! I usually find it at places like Walmart (I think that Cousin sells it). I have also seen it at a local fabric store in other colors. I would use it everyday if I could find a supplier!

    2. Ah, the secret is out. How clever. I'll have to check those out. Thanks for sharing this idea, Erin. Very cool! I hope you find the motherload of bulk chain. I totally agree that spools are the only way to go.

  13. I ditto Tamy Adams comment and I want the first pair. I can't tell you how nice it was for me to see your 3 versions or expressions of the sculpture. Expressing movement and color. Fabulous challenge and thank you for these well thought out challenges and for giving me an opportunity to push myself in a way that I couldn't myself :-)

    1. That, Miss Katherine, is the best compliment ever! And totally why I put challenges out there. To push your creative boundaries and get your mind wrapped around new ways to express yourself. That is what gives me momentum to continue with this each month! I enjoy doing this so much! Enjoy the day! Erin

  15. Those are all amazing. I love the first part, but the second pair is my favorite. I don't care how tangled they would get. It would be worth it to wear them. :)

I have been enjoying these challenges. I'm always like to see what everyone comes up with. There are always such great designs.
