Ear ear!

A week or so ago I made a 'singleton' earring - I've done them in the past, as custom orders for those who take asymmetry to the nth degree. After posting a picture on Instagram, I had quite a few requests for more.

If you are just going to wear one earring, it needs to make a real statement, rather than looking like you've just lost one!

I had a little stash of beautiful, orphan metallic finish lampwork leaf headpins by Linda Newnham and a few left of Faerystones swirly copper integrated earwires. Orphan components are perfect for singleton earrings.

I added toning swarowski crystals to each one to bring out those colours - unfortunately, it's so dark here today you can't quite see the shimmer.

The darkest one has been nabbed, but the others will flutter over to my Etsy shop soon. See you again in two weeks - keep well, everybody.

Making Lemonade

So, I'm on on a flight of fancy with these lovely autumnal rustic stoneware pieces by Ceramiky. I finished one, very happy, but then I had to make the other in mirror image. Always tricky for me, and fiddling too much with wire I knew was slightly too robust for the piece I managed to break off the corner. Who hasn't been there?

Sling it on the failure pile to cut up, or make the best of it?

Always a push to do something asymmetrical for me, I'm either in the mood or I'm not, and they can just look contrived.

I'd used a 22 gauge wire to keep its shape with the beaded arc, copper tube and carnelian disc with the carnelian flower firmly anchored on the other side. So for the partner I found a Kimberly Rogers lampwork headpin, fancy bronze beadcap by Anna Chernykh, and used the same carnelian flower and disc, copper tube and scarlet beads for the echo.

A friend described it as 'making lemonade ' - I guess, like making an omelette with broken eggs!

If you like asymmetry, they're in my Etsy shop now.

Hope life is treating you well, and see you again in  couple of weeks.

A Question of Balance.

Asymmetry. Not always easy, is it? To some it comes quite naturally, to others not so much. My head veers to the matching pair and I have to force myself to deviate. And how to achieve a sense of balance when your components/sizes/colours are different? This pair was a case in point.

These great neutral tribal patterned stoneware beads and charms are of course by the one and only Jana Bliznakova, but one is different in shape and considerably shorter than the other. The answer came in the form of this one off crusty soldered headpin that Lucy Haslam made for me. Fits perfectly with the design and balances the length. In the centre we have black crusty lampwork criffles by Kimberly Rogers - Kim and her husband Dave are about to set off from Alaska  to come over to the UK and we are hoping to meet up again (not least because she has a huge stash of stuff for me!) Criffles just make any design dance; like little ballet tutus. Joyous.

Hope you all have a good week - see you again soon.

A New Riff on the Criffles - Topsy Turvy

Many of the components I make aren't exactly matching.
That's the case with a batch of polymer clay pieces I made.
I love how they automatically lend themselves to asymmetrical designs.
I am especially fond of reverse placement in my designs on earring pairs.
Balanced yet more compelling to my eyes with the different placement of the components.
Paired with some of my lampwork "criffle" discs
Topsy and turvy (hmm, those words by themselves are just a bit weird. I think I've felt both topsy and turvy at different times)

These earrings have lots of splash and length but are very lightweight.
How about you? Do you like designing asymmetrically?
Thanks for visiting and Happy Summer creating!

Just Needed Some Love

There the asymmetrical etched spotted headpins sat in my shop.
unloved, un-bought-en and finally expired
Then they become my challenge.
I just got some of RaggedRobyn's wonderful stoneware bicones in the mail this week

A little Bali silver and Lila Koberstein's ceramic discs to equal out the length a bit

Good to go, ready for some lobe love!

Thanks for visiting

Falling leaves

Happy Autumn / Fall to you all!

I've been in autumn mode for some weeks now. I've also, as you may have noticed from my recent posts here, been loving asymmetrical earring designs. The enamel leaf here is from C-Koop. I got it months ago and had forgotten all about it. I spotted it when looking for something else the other day and knew it was time to use it. I had the Vintaj copper leaf on my table already, so these fell together quite nicely.

They're available here in my Etsy shop.

Bye for now, Claire

Collective

It's been a little while since I posted here, with one thing and another, but I'm back today with another asymmetrical pair of earrings.

I love these washed out blues. I've teamed a deep blue Scorched Earth drop with a ceramic feather that I made. Then I added a beautiful streaked czech glass rectangle and a sodalite hoop. I also mixed in some more czech glass and some teeny moonstone wheels.

They're available here in my Etsy shop.

Bye for now, Claire
