Studio Clean Up

Basically Spring Cleaning in the Fall... not quite Fall but you know what I mean.
I'll probably still be cleaning when Spring rolls around so it works...right?

I don't know about you but my studio clean up is constantly interrupted by creating.
Bright shiny objects I forgot I had set the creative juices flowing that I can't ignore!

Renaissance Windows

Hello, lovelies!  It's good to be back--it feels like it's been a while!  💗

The idea for the earrings I'm writing about today started quietly, when I found these beads at Arte Bella Surplus, one of my long-time favorite supply shops:      

I didn't buy them for any particular project, but rather because I like window beads and because their cross-like shape reminds me of certain Renaissance (or Renaissance-style) earrings I've seen in photos and in museums.  

Below are examples of variations of the same cross motif.  The first pair (left to right) is a simple quatrefoil shape, not unlike the window beads pictured above.  The second pair below also reflects the cross motif, in two ways:  with the petals and the pearls. And the third pair is obviously a cross. Each of these three examples also have a central focus where the arms of the "cross" would meet: the first pair has a tiny quatrefoil flower at its center, and white pearls sit at the centers of the other two pairs.     

                                                         

I had a beautiful pair of small rainbow Goddess charms by KristiBowmanDesign, and just for fun I laid them on my work table next to two of the blue-green window beads, and I had a feeling I might have something special.  💗

I added a pair of beautiful three-sided iris-colored Czech glass window beads, and small gleaming lights of glass and crystal.

You Need Hands

You'd have to be of a certain age to recognise the musical reference in the title (Max Bygraves, one of my grandma's favourites!) but you needn't do so to appreciate the beauty of these golden hand connectors, made by our own Suhana Hart.
I first came across them when searching for new and appropriate things to incorporate into our recent Game of Thrones jewellery show. They were perfect for earrings I called Aeksion Ondos (Golden Hand, or Jaime Lannister ), wired with emerald carved onyx.  They whizzed out of the show,  I was then asked to make another pair and was interested to find out that the buyer, a friend of my daughter's, was a practitioner in Bowen Therapy. Bowen Therapy is an holistic alternative form of physical manipulation of the soft tissue which can relax contracted muscles and tendons.  So her lovely earrings were an expression of her profession!

 

When I ordered from Suhana I got an extra pair and with these I have again turned one, and wired so they are 'handed' (no pun  intended!). The briolettes are one of my favourite gems, Azurite, beautifully coloured and striated. I've picked up two of the colours in the stones with swarowskis and added hand made pure brass earwires.

 

 

I wonder who will buy them? Maybe someone else for whom hands are an expression of something meaningful in their life. I do hope so.

Autumn Glow

As summer days start to fade a bit, I'm looking ahead toward autumn jewelry designs. Although I'm sad that summer will end soon; I really love fall colors! Our early autumns are usually quite sunny and pleasant  here. I love the glow of the sun as seen through a canopy of autumn colored leaves.

I made today's earrings with this image in mind. I started with some small lampwork glass beads by Beads and Botanicals. Brass bead caps fancy them up a bit. Three really cool, fluted vintage beads in yellow and orange dangle from each earring. The vintage beads are acrylic and weigh next to nothing, so although they have a definite presence, they are very comfortable to wear. I wire wrapped the brass around the tops of the vintage beads for an extra decorative touch. I would wear these year round, but especially late summer through November.

What's on your autumn bucket list? We'll be crunching through leaves, taking photography trips and celebrating our granddaughter's first birthday. The Autumn Glow earrings are available in my shop now.  I'll see you again in two weeks.

William Morris Faux Tin

Hello, Beady Peeps!  

I've been working a lot with William Morris prints lately.  The Art Bead Scene Studio Blog has been exploring different Art Journey Challenges this year and this time around it's all about William Morris.  As some of you may know, I do earring designs for them as well as "The Earring Whisperer".  Well, after finishing up my post this month I discovered these gorgeous faux tin crescents made by Heather Powers.  I loved the pattern so much that I decided to do a new pair for Earrings Everyday, too! 

*"William Morris (24 March 1834 – 3 October 1896) was a revolutionary force in Victorian Britain: his work as an artist, designer, craftsman, writer and socialist dramatically changed the fashions and ideologies of the era."

Arched shaped copper charms, faux tin finish with a William Morris Tulip pattern by Heather Powers.  These hang so beautifully and have wonderful movement.

The carved black horn squares made a beautiful contrast against the print and pops of brassy gold accents.  The Arts and Crafts Movement used a lot of dark rich wood and I thought this deep color horn brought out that feature.

I tried the arcs on the bottom first but loved it more as a prominent "crown-like" top.

Cherry Blossoms

Who doesn't love a bit of cherry blossom, eh?

These beautiful enamelled charms are by  French artist Carole Pons of Brume de terre. If you've not checked out her shop yet -do. Such beautiful work. Delicate and vibrant at the same time.

These are her pretty Japanese cherry blossom charms. This pair -a rather striking pillar box red. With little freshwater pearls and oxidised black brass hoops

I bought this turquoise pair a while ago ( I may even have written about them before!). Czech glass and red lampwork spacers accompany them, and the enamels are framed by oxidised black brass hoops. These were a favourite pair, and I was delighted when a lovely friend bought them. They look rather splendid on her

Discs

Hello earring friends, happy August 15.

At the moment we are actually on holiday. A proper holiday YAY. We are staying in a small mountain cabin, an hour drive away from the massive tourism on the campsite, where we normally live. And I brought my beads with me. Well, part of my stash, as there couldn't fit more in the car LOL. So basically I have created my own bead retreat. And I am so happy to finally have time to play with my beads for a complete day. A complete week.  Better still: two weeks.....
Most people we encounter think we are always on holiday, living partly in Greece and partly in the Netherlands. I wish this was true. Yep, we are living in a "holiday" country, in a camper on a campsite. But we both have a daytime job as well.

In the stash I brought with me I am rediscovering all the treasures I have been hoarding for quite some time. Having remade the disc earrings two weeks ago I came across a complete treasure trove of disc (and other) beads made by Debbie Sanders. I so admire and love her beads and craftsmanship. And what do you know... they go perfect with the gorgeous polymer clay beads made by Cindy Hinds.

My Generation

From 15th to 18th August 1969, 400,000 music fans descended on a farmers field in Woodstock, New York, for three days of peace, love and music. Probably the most influential music festival ever held, it became legendary. I'm of that generation - in 1969 I was 18, just left sixth form after my A Levels, about to get engaged and life was magic, with music playing a huge part of it. Many of the bands playing were favourites - The Who, Jimi Hendrix (I'd seen him on tour in the UK a couple of years before, lying flat on the stage, playing his guitar behind his back !) Joe Cocker, Joan Baez, Janis Joplin - the list goes on.
This weeks earrings remind me of a 60's fad that I still love - tie dye. We dyed everything that stood still long enough - t shirts, skirts, shoes, you name it.  And of course, Jon Burgess components are recycled electronic bits with polymer clay - we recycled or re-used pretty much everything in those pre-plastic days. Anyone else make hippie necklaces from dried melon seeds? 
The beautiful mismatched lampwork in greens and blues is by Joanne Joyce, with African turquoise and raw rubies. I've played around with wiring them upside down.

Sweet little ceramic retro doll faces by Donna Perlinplim.  I especially love these pieces because they are made thin and very lightweight. 

I added stunning faceted, vintage blue glass beads. They really bring out her eyes!

I also added some highly oxidized spacers that look like the spikes on some Jacks! 

I ran across a photo of my kitty Pepper and I from a long while ago goofing around in the studio with a big eye app.  Pepper's eyes were big enough naturally that he really didn't even need it! lol

Summer Swing!

Hello!

Some very summery earrings for you today. The little polymer clay charms (so sorry to not remember the artist) started off life as part of another pair of earrings. But  I was never quite sure of them, so they sat in my box of half finished things (it's a big box). But something drew me to them again. Probably the colours. And the fact that I had some very pretty purple beaded beads by Sarah of Beadecked by Beads. They were a perfect match!

 And both components have beautiful textures as well as colours.
The little beaded beads sit on some simple copper headpins and the earrings have a certain amount of swing to them.

They'll be available in my showcase over on The Earrings Show in Facebook Land on 23rd August.

Colours of a Peacock

Hi, it's raining here today but still quite warm, I hope the weather is ok with you, if not here are some colourful earrings to hopefully add a bit of cheer to your day.

Whilst going through my stash of copper components I came across these beautiful copper painted wings with resin  by Kristi Bowman-Gruel. The colours are fabulous and remind me of those in a peacock's feathers.

Then I begun my search for beads with the same lovely colours and iridescence, once found I played about with different combinations adding some copper beadcaps also and came up with these, I hope you like them. The lampwork birds are by Kateřina Sojková and the beaded beads are by Louise Goodchild. I have included Czech glass beads and copper ear wires.

Evolution

Hi lovely earrings lovers,
How are you all doing? Any holiday plans? We will go to a tiny house in the mountains this month. It is just a 45 minutes drive from the campsite where we live but it makes a huge difference. Cooler and most of all.....quiet.The campsite is always extremely busy during the month of August. I will take a large portion of my beads with me, so it will be a sort of bead retreat for me :)
Ok, what do I have to show you today? Evolution of an earring pair. Well, that's what I like to think, I hope you feel the same when you see this.
When a piece of jewelry doesn't sell (or I don't like it) I take it apart and create something new with the components. That's what I did with these glass discs made by Debbi Sanders.
This is the first attempt, back in 2015(!):

Combined with lampwork glass head pins from Linda Newnham and vintage lucite.
My second attempt from 2018:

The design was getting better, but I still wasn't too happy about it.
So I took these apart last May and made my last design: 

Combined with lampwork glass beads from Lesley McIver, Czech glass and ear wires made by Lucy Haslam. And I am totally happy with these. You know, when you are in "the zone", the pieces seem to design themselves. That's what happened here. What do you think? You prefer the last design or rather one of the previous ones?
